When the surf rolled in on January 28, 1998, dedicated surfers braved waves as tall as 50 feet in a death-defying bid to ride some of the most fearsome waters ever to hit the shore. As the dreaded El Niño stirred the waters and created a gargantuan storm just off Alaska, rumors quickly began to spread that Oahu's north shore would soon be hit by waves of unfathomable strength. Surfers scrambled to wax their boards and make way for the ocean, and filmmaker Tim Bonython loaded up his camera to capture some of the most amazing surfing footage ever seen on film.
